Thirsty Girls
We are having a record breaking dry spell here in the PacNW. Over 50 days with no rain (I did feel 3 or 4 little drops about a week ago, but that doesn't count). The good news is....all of the slugs have shriveled up. The bees are very thirsty, though. I have put out a couple of watering holes for them. This one is their favorite. It is a shallow birdbath filled with polished stones. It allows the bees to get a drink without the risk of drowning. There are 9 honey bees in this photo, and an opportunistic yellow jacket (click to enlarge).

I've been thinking of doing this too... I'm wondering how often you need to refill or replace the sugar water.... or is it just water?
It's just water. Bees get thirsty, too. If they don't have plenty of water they may end up drowning in the neighbor's kiddie pool. And bet you didn't know that a dead bee can still sting you.
Be sure to put plenty of stones into the bee-bath so they have a place to safely stand while they drink. :-)
